Volunteers

Collaborative volunteer Matt Huffman with his son Renzo.
Matt Huffman is a project architect at Brawer & Hauptman Architects and received a 2009 Outstanding Volunteer Award from the Community Design Collaborative. Matt volunteered on a project with the Center for Literacy to help assess their needs and provide them with guidelines and advice on selecting a new site.

Best Practices

Professional schools are increasingly emphasizing pro bono work, according to a report recently released by the Taproot Foundation. Students in architecture, design, business and law are pushing for socially conscious careers, fed by baby boomer teachers and practitioners who are promoting the educational importance of volunteer work, which has created more opportunities for pro bono work for students in professional programs.

The Collaborative came in second with 569 votes in the 2009 Philebrity Awards Poll for the Collaboration of the Year category!
Many exciting Philadelphia organizations were featured in the poll, including some of our partners and clients like Next Great City, Pennsylvania Fresh Food Financing Initiative, Project HOME and New Kensington CDC.

Volunteers

Tom Halliwell of Duffield Associates received a 2009 Outstanding Volunteer Award.
Tom Halliwell is a civil engineer who works as a Project Manager at Duffield Associates and was named a Community Design Collaborative 2009 Outstanding Volunteer for his work on the Greening of Greene Street Friends project. With Tom’s assistance, the volunteer team developed a conceptual landscape plan for Greene Street Friends School that would incorporate sustainability measures and enhance the students’ play experience.

Service Grants

Norris Square Civic Association applied for a service grant to redevelop the St. Boniface Church complex.
The Community Design Collaborative has begun work on the final round of service grants for 2009, awarded to the Borough of Millbourne/Pennsylvania Environmental Council, Cedar Park Neighbors Association, Cramer Hill Community Development Corporation, Impact Services Corporation, Logan Community Development Corporation, Norris Square Civic Association and South Philadelphia H.O.M.E.S., Inc. Our nonprofit clients are pursuing community development projects ranging from redeveloping a vacant church complex to renovating a golf course and clubhouse.
